The "dream trip" we wanted!
After Gerhard retired on January 1st, 2020, we were able to start our long-planned dream trip to Chile & Argentina. On January 3rd we were already on the plane to Santiago and on January 8th we took over our „home“ for the next seven weeks, an Atacama Camper on a Dodge RAM.
The highlights of our trip were the crossing of the Andes on the old road to the "Cristo Redentor de los Andes", the wineries in Mendoza, the Chilean lake area and the Isla of Chiloe. Then via Bariloche in "Argentine Switzerland" to Carretera Austral and Lago General Carrera - again across the border to the northern (Fitz Roy) and southern (Lago Argentino) part of the Glaciares National Park. The mountains, lakes and glaciers are simply spectacular! Back in Chile we visited the National Parc Torres del Paine - a wonder world! In the end, our journey ended after almost 7000 km on the Magellan road in Punta Arenas.
Our camper never let us down, only a flat tire was quickly repaired by a helpful Argentine family who happened to came by - ¡Muchas gracias!
We camped "wild" from time to time - in both countries and never had any problems with it, campsites are also common, but in quite different quality and due to the lack of signage not always easy to find despite the helpful app iOverlander. We soon developed a certain routine for border crossings - there were no serious problems and the officials of both countries were often determined, but always friendly!
We took a lot of wonderful impressions with us, and took almost 6000 pictures ... It was the "dream trip" we wanted!
